Paul Inouye, Lead Designer:

Rental items have their place in F2P but must be chosen very carefully. We are currently only entertaining 2 "rental" items and those are XP boosters and CBill boosters. All other non-consumable items will be persistent. By non-consumable I pretty much mean ammunition will be the only CBill cost that you will eventually run out of and have to purchase more.

David Bradley, Game Designer:

Als Ergänzung zum Dev Blog 5:

We will not have pinpoint accuracy but rather, as has been hinted and guessed at in other posts, a weapon convergence system. The explanation of the system just wasn't in the scope of this blog post.

But here's the brief rundown for you guys: Basically, your targeting systems are always trying to adjust the angle of your weapons so that they converge or focus at a distance of whatever your aiming reticles are pointing at. So, if you fire at a target very far away, your lasers (or whatever else) may fire nearly parallel to each other; firing at a target up close will angle the shots inwards. However, the adjustment of these angles is not instant.

For instance, if you were facing a building, while taking cover right up against it, your convergence would adjust to hit just a short distance in front of you (the distance to the building). When you step out from around that building and fire on an enemy in the distance, your convergence point would automatically begin to adjust, but not instantly. If you shoot too soon, your first shots may converge and cross a short distance in front of you and completely miss the enemy as they pass on either side of him. Or perhaps you were aiming for the center torso and hit his arms instead, as your aim adjusts towards his center.

Liao?!?!?!?!?!?

Topic: *In-Fighting in a City: The Right Way to Do It*

Urban combat is one of the few times that MechWarrior games can feel like
other FPS', at least in how you're placing yourself. The idea is that,
unless you are firing, there should be a building between you and the
enemy at all times. The 'best 'Mechs' for city fighting have bursty
weapons - AC's, alpha'd lasers, etc - and a fairly quick step. One of the
reasons Hunchbacks do well is that they can edge around a corner, fire
their AC, and move back behind the building. This can make them annoying
to hit. It also makes for some awesome duels between Jenners and
Hunchbacks.

Also those worried that Assaults will rule the day have yet to see how
goddamn annoying Lights and Mediums can be with a tonne of cover.

For anyone who thinks city fighting is just 'waiting in ambush = win'
wait'll you get outflanked by a Scout with ECM or something, see how that
works out for you.

Topic: *Ratios, Warfare Roles, and Play Diagrams*

Nothing official here, but I think about it like this:
3 Lights, mediums, heavies, assaults.

Recon Lance: 3 Light
Skirmish Lance: 3 Medium
Support Lance: 2 Heavy, 1 Assault
Breakthrough Lance: 1 Heavy, 2 Assault

Recons find the enemy, Mediums pin them down (with the Recon), Support
bring the rain, Breakthrough hit 'em when they're staggering.

I think this will be easier to organize than most people realise. If
you're in a Catapult, chances are you'll be holding back, waiting for
someone to give you some targets. If you're in a Hunchback, you're going
to be able to cordon off avenues of approach - nobody likes an AC/20 in
the face. Jenners (or Jenners and Commandos working together) pack-
hunting are incredibly effective.

Now you'll notice I made 'lances' of three - that was to demonstrate that
there's flexibility in roles - sometimes you'll want a Skirmish lance,
sometimes you'll want a Support Lance, and sometimes the Skirmish lance
becomes the breakthrough. Hell your Recon could be a Light and three
Mediums, and it could still work. The idea is flexibility and role
utilization.

Topic: *Are most ready for 1 shot kills in this game*

I'm not sure you can one-shot kill here. We've had devastating alphas,
but I've never seen a full-health, i dunno, Jenner say, taken down in a
single salvo.

Topic: *Why you want MechWarrior Online to be Free-To-Play*

To be clear, using WoT as an example has one large problem - there's no
'Mech in MWO that cannot hurt another tank. Basically - there are no
'tiers'. So, that right there throws a wrench into the works.

Russ Bullock, PGI President

Topic: *The Medium Mech - Where does it fit?*

12 March 2012 - 09:58 PM

Apologies as I didnt read every single response so I may repeat some information. A lot of this will comem down to really balancing our match making. Ideally all of the lances are well balanced between the roles as created by the players and the match maker. So playing your centurion wont put you in a match with 23 other heavies and Assaults. That should be balanced out with a mix of lights, mediums etc etc each time you take to the field.

Matchmaking will be a challenge but were committed to working hard at getting it right.

Topic: *Role Warfare: Not A Scout*

I'm too (busy) lazy to find it, but I wrote my 'perfect 12' somewhere, and point out that Recon does not mean "find enemy; hide." It simply means you have the speed and manoeuvrability to scout out the enemy, and relay that info back. At that point, you become a Skirmisher - you bite and try to seperate the enemy units.

People don't realise this, but 'Stormtrooper' units in real armies often work this way. Find enemy, engage, discover weakness, pin down. Then the Heavies come in to hold off flanking attempts, and the Assaults go through the middle.

Does it have to be that way? No, absolutely not. The reason we use Lights as examples of Recon is that even though you could scout as a Hunchback, you'd get to the enemy: A) After their faster scouts are already past you, be unable to avoid being encircled as easily due to low speed. Thus it's simply a matter of 'what is this 'Mech built for.'

A great example of a 'Mech in the Heavy class that would be a great scout is the Dragon - high armour and speed to find and engage the enemy, excellent 'stand off' weaponry to keep the enemy under fire, and the ability to quickly fall back if needed.

As to Commando vs. Dragon: As people said one difference will be modules, but also consider the Commando is moving 20 tons at that speed, whereas the Dragon is moving 60 tons. The Commando will be a lot more manoeuvrable at that speed than a Dragon.

Garth Erlam, Community Manager
So for anyone curious, the 'Mech people currently think is 'the most OP is the'....
Jenner.
yes, the Jenner. Sean and Omid just took out an entire enemy team (5 vs. 5 in this case) with two Jenners. It was glorious to watch.
Paul gets a mention for going 4-0 in his Hunchback in another game.

Paul Inouye, Lead Designer
Oh....Em....Geee...
Today's playtest focused on team/lance play. All the little happy Catapult noobs didn't realize that overloading their ammo for LRMs made them too heavy to use jump jets.. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Russ and I were scouting in Hunchbacks... yes... HUNCHBACKS.... and relaying targets back to our team... it was glorious watching the other team get rained upon from the combo Atlas and 3 Catapults. After a few kills at long range, we (Russ and I) had to move in to midfield combat. We had Jenners running around us like rats. Kyle is picking people off in the Atlas and the remaining Catapults ran distraction and softening targets... it was an orchestra of team play and we rolled over the other team.
The entire dev team is still buzzing with excitement on how that felt.
And if you must know.. I was 4-0 at the end of the match.

Dennis de Koning, Art Director
Excited about playing the Catapult, got my *** handed to me twice by Russ; shot me outa the air.
Sucked, but was sooooo cooooooooool!!!!!!!!! [squeaks like little school girl]

I'm interested to know how a mech with a max weight limit, and jump jets designed to support that weight, can be overloaded.

The Catapult is a 65 ton mech; its jump jets are designed to lift and move a 65 ton machine. Overloading on ammo? That sounds like the weight limit was increased beyond what the original thrust to weight ratio was designed to handle. Clarify?

I see two possibilities: 1) The effect of JumpJets scales with weight such that a fully loaded Mech can't accelerate upward off the ground anymore, or 2) You can overload Mechs (to a limited extent) at the expense of maneuverability and speed.

Either one makes sense for a videogame. In one case a Catapult can pump out 65 tons of thrust which is enough to hover a 65 ton Mech, but not enough to lift off; that would reward the player who goes into battle lean and mean. The other case is an example of how going slightly over a chassis's weight limit causes severe deleterious effects; while going from lightly loaded to fully loaded should slow you down somewhat, going just a hair over that weight limit should impose artificially-steep performance cuts designed for game balancing purposes.

I would like to see an overload option available, along with bright red warnings about how you're over your weight limit and your Mech's performance will be very compromised... slower top speed, rotational movement, weapons convergence, reduced heat sink efficiency, jump jets inoperative, the lot.

I'm guessing you can simply overload your mech, but there are maneuverability concequences. This makes sense to me, you can overload a cargo truck and it will still work, just has problems.

You can also underload a truck, it's more maneuverable then... So long as there are sensible concequences to any benefits, and the benefits are limited, it seems like a good thing.

Let me put this to rest...
The Catapult is a freshly added Mech that hasn't been tuned yet. Customization wasn't really limited on this test Mech so people were able to overload it with ammo. This will not be the case in the future.

Matthew Craig, Technical Director
I probably say this every week but this week was the best play test yet, now with 100% more smack talk thanks to working chat. I think Paul spent more time smack talking than piloting.
And a minor issue was finally resolved where playing in the test lab meant everyone showed up as test-lab1, test-lab2 etc. now names are attached so really brings home exactly who you're fighting. Makes it so much easier to go and (gloat like a ****) congratulate the other player for his efforts.

Russ actually dominated one of the games with the most kills would you believe, one of which was me *hangs head in shame* now I can't decide if it's better to be on his team or not

ANMERKUNG:

Topic: *How can people who lose frequently afford the c-bills to keep playing?*

I know that typical gameplay activity will gain you C-Bills and XP, like killing other Mechs, accomplishing Scouting goals, etc. My question is:

"If we have players who lose frequently and early in their matches, then how can they repair their Mechs and keep playing the game?"

Will Mech repairs be so affordable that even the players who die right-off-the-bat can afford to repair their Mechs to operational status after each mission, or will repairs be free up-to-a-point and then begin costing C-bills... or...?

I can't expect anyone to pay cash/money for more c-bills just so they can repair their Mech for the next match, especially if they haven't played much and aren't convinced that MW:O is as awesome as I imagine it will be. I heard the Devs say that you can't lose your Mech to combat effects, and they said that partially-repaired Mechs can be fielded in combat, but I don't remember them saying anything about how much it costs to repair a Mech and how much "Mission Success" you'd have to experience before you can afford full Mech repairs.

Bryan Ekman, Creative Director
This is one of our concerns and will be addressed by a lot of play testing and balancing. I view the OP's concerns as a stick if we do not address it correctly. I don't want people to be punished so severely, that they are no longer able to play. This is a game after all, something we do for enjoyment.

Vlt. könnte unser MWO Korrespondent Arnold mal was dahingehend nachfragen?!

[BRYAN] All Ranked matches affect the Inner Sphere. We are considering several options for nonranked matches, such as a practice server for players to test out tactics and BattleMech builds.

Thank you for the response to the OP. Is the answer the same if 4 mech teammates shoot at the same target at the same time? As i understand it the plan at launch is to have a 16v16 matches (or some such number), so in theory a properly disciplinced team thats focus fires at a single mech theoritically should knock the snot out of said mech.

Garth Erlam, Community Manager
Basically, no. Though we've yet to see a lot of 4 v 1's because people tend to at least stay in pairs. We had a pair of Jenners absolutely run roughshod over two Catapults and an Atlas. Focus-fire is tougher than it sounds, even sitting next to someone on your team - It's not a four on four where each Lance stands in the middle of a field.

On the 'legging' debate - you can technically try to leg; however it's equally viable to 'headshot' or 'core' (literally burn through the Centre Torso). Also Legging really only works on slow 'Mechs, as hitting a Jenner is hard enough - legging one is almost entirely down to luck.

Can you say anything now about how easy it is (or isn't) to head-shoot mechs?

For example, in MW4, the actual "head" hitbox on the atlas was only its left eye. The skull was counted as part of the CT. Is it like this in MWO, or is there some other kind of head-shooting mechanic.

Garth Erlam, Community Manager
It's a fairly large object (in the case of the Atlas it's, uh, the head) but due to movement, turning, bouncing about, actually landing repeated hits is tough. If you're thinking of AC/20ing the head, it's a lot harder than it might seem. Thomas is the main sniper - he tends to go either Hunchback or Swayback and just target the head. Seems like 50% of the time he headshots someone in his Swayback he manages to overheat and kill himself, hahaha.

Also, yes organized groups will do well against non-organized groups. Again though, having a whole lance fire on one person is mostly unavoidable, but it's also pretty rare. Four 'Mechs standing that close are just asking for LRM's to annihilate them.

MW:O wird, was Server usw. betrifft. wohl vom Aufbau her WoT ähneln. Standard MMO halt.

UPDATE:

War klar, der AWESOME:

BattleMech 8 - Awesome
by Piranha Games Mar 28, 2012 10:00 AM PDT

While it was somewhat rare to go from Recon to Assault, it was not unheard of. Her last mission was still being talked about – facing a Centurion head-on with a Commando was a big deal apparently. But this new ‘Mech… She knew she sat astride Death-at-Range, but it still felt… odd.

Truth be told, she missed her old ‘Mech. The views were all wrong; she kept looking at screens that weren’t there.

Suddenly a sharp ‘beep’ sounded. Her Recon- correction, the Recon squad, spotted the enemy.

“Assaults inbound, Echo. Range in five – light ‘im up.”

“Roger Recon.”

She could feel the small whine as she raised her ‘Mechs right arm, and aligned her torso. Alpha in three, two… The Atlas rounded the corner, far off in the distance – her zoomed crosshair centre-mass, she fired.

One never really got used to the sound and feeling of a PPC firing. Three at once was even more so

Her Awesome rocked back as all three PPC bolts cut through the air, a distinct crackle in her ears as she watched the right arm explode on the Atlas, the harsh glow of the right torso as the PPC blasts tried to burn through. Her cockpit instantly filled with steam, and sweat was pouring out of her – the ‘Mech screamed a heat warning at her, and she switched fire groups to the right arm.

“Woah, confirmed hit Echo; he’s panicking.”

“Roger, Recon.”

The enemy Atlas, instead of moving ahead into cover, was trying to backpedal – her next PPC shot caused his right torso to explode, rocking him sideways and nearly knocking him over. The next shot cored out the Atlas, and it fell backwards out of sight.

She heard a soft whistling as LRM’s fell onto the Assaults who had taken cover behind this Atlas – that Recon was doing an excellent job. She allowed herself a smile remembering doing just that.

“Skirmish force moving in, we’ll flush them your way Echo.”

“Roger.”

The Recon squad joined the Skirmishers, and as promised, the other Assault ‘Mechs came into view, attempting to avoid the biting fire of the Centurion/Hunchback mixture, while bringing their own weapons to bear. She toggled through each PPC, targeting weak points and assisting Skirmish and Recon when she could. She shifted her torso to target an enemy Jenner that was attempting to flank when a warning sound filled her ears, her display flashing:

WARNING: INCOMING MISSILES

Topic: *Bryan gives details about claiming Canon Merc's...*

Alright... long overdue, much distraction in between.

Players will NOT be able to claim canon units as their own. When it comes to Mercenary Units/Corps/Companies, these names will not be available during MC creation. Trying to circumvent the naming system will result in the Merc Corp being renamed/denied.

Faction units are being handled slightly different. When a player aligns themselves with one of the major factions, say House Kurita, they will have the opportunity to join famous house units as the rank up by earning loyalty points. Some house units will require additional feats of excellence and challenges to achieve before membership is granted. Since these units are not run by the players, and we can reserve/restrict access to very active/famous units for sake of preserving the BattleTech timeline.

Our general stance on player run merc units is simple - create your own legacy! It's very unfair for players to stake ownership over a canon unit, and creates a host of politic and pr issues. So we're avoiding the complexities and edge cases associate with players assuming the role of these units and encouraging you to forge your own destiny.

This is our launch POV. As always, we listen to your feedback and ways to improve the system.

http://mwomercs.com/news/2012/05/235-tweetchat-roundup

Zitat Russ Bullock.

NACHTRAG:

RB - as to all the questions about Beta! Ready? Stay tuned for that info soon ( as in next week ) #mwochat

Your beta status is PENDING Check back soon for an update."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Am 22. erschien "Ask the Devs 3" (http://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/8656-ask-the-devs-3-answers/):

- "Feundesfeuer" ist in MW:O an, man sollte also aufpassen, wohin man ballert!

Gerade gelesen:

Topic: Despawning of dead Mechs: Will it really be that fast?

08 May 2012 - 06:56 PM

Dead mechs do not despawn during gameplay. Reason you saw them despawning is we had respawn on for presentation reasons(people who die to fast could get back into the battle.

- Brian Windover

Memo an mich: Hupe in Mech einbauen.
